چکیده

Stochastic, discontinuous flow is ubiquitous in the plastic deformation of small-volume metallic materials. We have identified a sizestrengthening effect on the stress to initiate the jerky plastic yielding in nanoscale volumes of copper single crystals, subjected to nanoindentation in different orientations. Such a nanoscale size effect arises due to the stochastic nature of dislocation sources, in contrast to the microscale size effect often attributed to plastic strain gradients. The jerky response can result from the activation of either surface or bulk heterogeneous dislocation sources, as governed by the distribution and resistance of dislocation locks. Implications concerning the deformation mechanism in materials with flow defect-limited characteristics are discussed. 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Diffusive versus Displacive Contact Plasticity of Nanoscale Asperities: Temperature- and Velocity-Dependent Strongest Size.

We predict a strongest size for the contact strength when asperity radii of curvature decrease below 10 nm. The reason for such strongest size is found to be correlated with the competition between the dislocation plasticity and surface diffusional plasticity. The essential role of temperature is calculated and illustrated in a comprehensive asperity size-strength-temperature map taking into ac...

Use of nanoscale zero-valent iron to improve the shear strength parameters of gas oil contaminated clay

In recent years, the nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles have been used successfully for the degradation of hydrocarboncompounds and remediation of other pollutants. Nevertheless, as far as we know, there is no specific study on the improvement of thegeotechnical properties of contaminated soils with hydrocarbon compounds by NZVI. This study used NZVI particles to remove gasoil in a cla...

Fundamental differences in mechanical behavior between two types of crystals at the nanoscale.

We present differences in the mechanical behavior of nanoscale gold and molybdenum single crystals. A significant strength increase is observed as the size is reduced to 100 nm. Both nanocrystals exhibit discrete strain bursts during plastic deformation. We postulate that they arise from significant differences in the dislocation behavior. Dislocation starvation is the predominant mechanism of ...

Effect of Nanoscale Titanium Dioxide Particles on the Germination and Growth of Canola (Brassica napus)

An investigation was initiated to examine the effects of nanoscale titanium dioxide particles on plant growth and development. In view of the widespread cultivation of canola in Iran and in other parts of the globe and in view of the potential influence of titanium on its growth, this plant was chosen as the model system. Canola seeds were separately treated with different concentrations of nan...

Reducing deformation anisotropy to achieve ultrahigh strength and ductility in Mg at the nanoscale.

In mechanical deformation of crystalline materials, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS; τCRSS) is the stress required to initiate movement of dislocations on a specific plane. In plastically anisotropic materials, such as Mg, τCRSS for different slip systems differs greatly, leading to relatively poor ductility and formability. However, τCRSS for all slip systems increases as the physical...
